Puerto Columbia Venezuela

In total we stayed 6 nights in Chichiriviche until we went to Puerto Columbia.
Also known as Choroni in Parque National Henri Pittier Park

This is an awfully small laid back town. Just across the river and about a 10 minute walk there is an alluring beach filled with fish restaurants, free camping and showers.

What an interesting, thrilling and simply a beautiful ride to Puerto Columbia from Maracay. 1,830 meter climb. Tremendous; as Brent said people pay big bucks for a ride like this at the fair grounds.

Take a look at this You Tube video of the roads http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4J6R8AGMNPM&feature=related

This area is located inside the national park (Henri Pittier The park is a favorite place for birdwatchers, as more than five hundred -- 41% of Venezuela's and 6.5% of the world's - bird species are found here.).
Very cute colonial town and much cleaner that Chichiriviche!
The people were great and the beach was to die for.

The entire time it was hot (around 31-33 degrees) the water had good waves the first day with soft sand to walk out on for a long way. The second day the waves became rather significant over 10 feet we think some were close to 14 feet. There were people surfing the first day but not so much the second as the waves were very tight and possible to bad to surf?

The life guards were working over time due to the strong current. They most likely dragged 20 young men in during the day through the waves. (Unfortunately we left the camera at the posada (hotel) as we thought it would be the same old thing.-Oops

People were interesting as well. There were so many thong bikinis running around stuck up butts and slapped on bodies that should not even consider doing so that I felt more than slightly liberated. Not saying that there were not some good bodies-there were it is just that the little extra chub I have did not seem that bad and it was good to let go a little not feeling the pressure of a magazine model. People were just people and everyone is entitled to have a great day on the beach and feel good.
.
One interesting note for all the people who have had to deal with vendors on the beach in Mexico the vendors here were quite different. There were men walking up and down the beach selling water and beer, just yelling it out and if you wanted some call him over. They sold food, pastries, other drinks, and oysters fresh with lime you simply needed to go no where. If that is not enough they sold sun screen, hats, jewellery sun glasses, all that you could possibly need.
It was great not to be hassled!
I thought this was a great place. The weekend rates are higher due to the demand in room nights. There are quite a lot of Posadas, haciendas and hostels to stay at on the weekend they range from $100 a night to $25 a night depending on ac, private bathroom etc.. We lucked out and got a great lady who was on here own and it cost us $25 US. Ranchero pueblo Nuevo was the name of the hacienda- it is on same street as Casa Luna near the bus pick up. Kitty corner to the internet cafe also she sells the best torte and there is a sign posted on the gates. 2,500 BS or 1.25 US a slice.

The place is deafening as bikes rip up and down the main strip plus the large bus honk for public to get on and at road crossings- NOT MUCH SLEEP. Nevertheless it was a comfortable spot with a hammock and cats to keep the bugs and cockroach’s down- This is good! If beach is not all that you need, there seemed to be a lot more to do, you could do hikes and trips through the national park, you could also scuba here.

I would definitely recommend anyone to come and visit here.

The ride alone is worth it. Ps there are no banks or ATMs here and not much for doing any grocery shopping either.
